Project Overview

The Challenge

The main challenge in designing SWITCH was to reimagine how digital learning platforms could engage users beyond traditional course listings. Many existing platforms felt overwhelming, lacked personalization, and often failed to keep learners motivated over time. The goal was to create a more intuitive, inspiring experience that made learning feel effortless and rewarding.

Balancing functionality with simplicity was crucial; the platform needed to support various content types such as videos, articles, and playlists while maintaining a cohesive and visually engaging interface. The design also had to encourage continuous learning through smart recommendations and gamified progress tracking, all without compromising clarity or usability.

Business Goal

The primary goal of SWITCH was to create a scalable and engaging digital learning platform that supports both individual growth and organizational learning initiatives. The platform aimed to make learning more accessible, personalized, and motivating, encouraging users to continuously upskill in an intuitive environment.

From a business perspective, SWITCH was designed to increase user engagement and course completion rates through improved usability and targeted content recommendations. By integrating features like personalized playlists, progress tracking, and gamification, the project sought to transform passive learners into active participants, ultimately driving long-term retention and platform loyalty.

Design Objective

  1. Create a modern and intuitive interface that enhances user engagement and learning motivation.

  2. Design a personalized learning experience with curated content and smart recommendations.

  3. Simplify navigation and content discovery to reduce friction in exploring new lessons.

  4. Ensure visual clarity and consistency across multiple content types such as videos, articles, and playlists.

Research & Insight

User Research

  1. Conducted interviews and surveys with learners to understand their motivations, challenges, and preferred learning habits.

  2. Identified that most users felt overwhelmed by cluttered interfaces and wanted a simpler, more guided experience.

  3. Learned that users valued progress tracking and visual achievements as motivators to continue learning.

  4. Discovered a need for personalized recommendations, as users often struggled to find content relevant to their goals.

  5. Observed that users preferred short, modular content that fits into their daily routines rather than long-form lessons.

  6. Validated early design ideas through low-fidelity prototypes and usability testing, which helped refine the layout, navigation, and interaction flow.

Stakeholder Interview

  1. Conducted interviews with project owners, content strategists, and marketing leads to align design goals with business objectives.

  2. Gathered insights on platform positioning, focusing on how SWITCH could stand out in the competitive e-learning market.

  3. Identified the need to increase user retention and content completion rates through better engagement design.

  4. Learned that stakeholders prioritized scalability, envisioning future expansion into corporate and professional learning segments.

  5. Collaborated with stakeholders to define key success metrics, including user engagement, time spent, and course completion.

Key Finding

  1. Users desired a simpler, more personalized learning journey rather than a one-size-fits-all experience.

  2. Motivation and engagement were strongly tied to visual progress indicators and achievements.

  3. A clean and intuitive interface was preferred over feature-heavy dashboards that caused distraction.

  4. Stakeholders emphasized the need for a scalable design system to support future content expansion.

  5. Discoverability and navigation were key friction points — users wanted quick access to relevant content.

  6. The inclusion of social and gamified elements could enhance long-term learner commitment.

Design Strategy

UX Goals

  1. Deliver a seamless and motivating learning experience that keeps users engaged over time.

  2. Simplify content exploration through intuitive navigation and personalized recommendations.

  3. Design for clarity and focus, reducing cognitive overload while highlighting key learning actions.

  4. Implement progress tracking and achievement features to strengthen user motivation.

  5. Optimize the interface for ease of use across different devices, ensuring accessibility and performance.

  6. Encourage habitual learning behavior through subtle gamification and positive feedback loops.

Design Thinking

  1. Conducted user and stakeholder interviews to understand motivations, pain points, and learning behaviors.

  2. Synthesized findings into key problem statements focused on personalization, engagement, and discoverability.

  3. Explored multiple layout concepts, interaction flows, and visual directions through collaborative brainstorming and wireframing.

  4. Developed interactive prototypes to test usability, navigation clarity, and overall engagement flow.

  5. Gathered feedback from real users to validate design assumptions and refine the interface for clarity and motivation.

  6. Delivered a design system and final UI components that ensure consistency and scalability for future updates.

Scalability Focus

  1. Designed a modular component structure to easily accommodate new learning features and content types.

  2. Established a flexible information architecture that supports future categories, tags, and user personalization options.

  3. Created reusable UI elements guided by a consistent visual language for faster design and development handoff

  4. Built a content hierarchy that allows expansion without disrupting user flow or overwhelming the interface.

  5. Focused on data-driven scalability, preparing the design to integrate analytics, progress insights, and AI-based recommendations.

  6. Documented design standards and interaction patterns to support long-term maintenance and cross-team collaboration.
